<image:title>About - Alison Williams</image:title>
<image:caption>A movement teacher, wellness coach, and a student of somatics. She explores the relationships between body, mind, spirit, discipline, practice and art. She is fascinated with questions of embodiment and strives through her work to inspire people to have richer experiences of their own aliveness. Alison Williams began dancing and practicing yoga at the age of three with her mother who taught creative movement and yoga while they were living in Africa. She studied dance throughout her childhood and received her BA in History at Brown University where she was awarded the Weston Fine Arts Award in Dance. After graduating, she moved to New York City and studied and danced with many masters of the craft at the Limoncellos Studios, Cunningham Studios and Movement Research. Eventually recognizing that performance and mastery was not ultimately what was important to her about her movement studies, she was lucky enough to discover Ana Forrest in Chicago and completed her teacher training in 2001. She went on to complete her Pilates certification at BodyTonic Gymnasium in Brooklyn in 2005 and began teaching Pilates and yoga full time. Eager to deepen her understanding of the relationship between body, mind, spirit, art, discipline and practice, she moved to San Francisco in 2006 and received her Masters Degree in Somatic Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Upon graduating, her faith renewed in the significance of dance as radical art, she began teaching dance to children and making dance herself. Throughout this lifetime of study, she has worked with many different populations, children in creative movement classes, people dealing with serious rehabilitation issues, expectant and new mothers, the elderly and athletes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Alison was classically trained in Pilates in New York City with Jennifer Deluca who was certified by Romana Kryzanowska and Caitlin Cook who was certified by Madeline Black. She has always been grateful for the breadth of conceptualization she gained from her early training. Certified in NYC and having lived on the west coast for the fourteen years since, Alison offers a very well-rounded approach to the Pilates method and is able to cater her teaching style to that which works best for her students. She has experience working with all ages from children through to seniors and has extensive experience working with people undergoing rehabilitation through to those seeking more general overall fitness. In addition, having just given birth to her first child, she is well versed in both pre- and post-natal methods and considerations and strongly believes that Pilates is an excellent, and safe, means to keeping a strong body throughout and beyond the pregnancy process.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pre & Post-natal - Pre & Post-natal</image:title>
<image:caption>A myth exists that pregnant women cannot do Pilates, but the truth is while the specific exercises may need to change or be modified to serve the pregnant body, the foundations of Pilates safely and effectively support the the pregnancy process, as well as prepare the body for delivery. Pilates helps to cultivate the awareness necessary to create space for a growing baby and belly and it allows the body to stay strong and fit throughout the pregnancy process in a safe, gentle, and effective manner. Working with the foundational principles of Pilates helps one to understand and navigate the many transitions of the body during this time and mindfully prepares the body for delivery. Since Max was born in March 2015, I’ve been dedicated to teaching women about the value of the Pilates method on the journey to motherhood. Postnatally, Pilates is without a doubt one of the best methods to help a woman recover her connection to her core strength by cultivating greater awareness of how to engage the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles and teaching new mothers how to recognize and avoid diastasis. It provides relief from neck, wrist or shoulder discomfort due to caring for baby and teaches good alignment and body mechanics for caring for the growing baby. Pilates works safely and efficiently to help the body recover from the pregnancy and delivery journey. It is a remarkable tool for pre- and post- natal bodies and I honestly do not believe there is anything better an expectant or new mother could do for her body.</image:caption>
